Kikagaku Moyo
July 2022
Interview with Tomo Katsurada & Go Kurosawa
Temple Magazine
Can you introduce your band?
Go
Kikagaku Moyo is a psychedelic rock band specialising in feel good music.
Temple Magazine
How would you describe the island in which you take us with this album Kumoyo Island?
Tomo
This is an imaginary island that we thought of during the first wave of COVID. None of the 5 members were in the same city at the time, as some were in Tokyo, others in Europe. We created an imaginary space where we could all hang out together, meet up, make music, and exchange ideas together. It is from this idea that the concept of the album first arose.
Temple Magazine
The use of the Japanese in your lyrics make us feel like we listen to some beautiful magic spells, what do you want to transfer to the public by the use of those language tone and sound?
Go
We don't really have Japanese lyrics, apart in 2 songs, one of which is in our latest album.
Tomo
Yes, otherwise it's just vocal sounds that both Go and I invent.
Temple Magazine
You have a taste for visual, and also the meaning of Kikagaku Moyo is geometric patterns. Who is designing the visual universe of your band?
Tomo
I take care of the art direction for the band. I choose different artists with whom we collaborate with for each and every album.
Temple Magazine
Could you explain to us how you record album and your relation with technical aspect of music?
Tomo
For us the technique in music is not as important as feeling. We always play intuitively. That's what makes sense most sense in our group.
Temple Magazine
You travel all around the world during this last months is there a place that is more special to you?
Go
We just finished our US tour, New York is very special to me. We did two concerts there. I also really like Madison, Wisconsin where we played in small theatres, it was very beautiful.
Tomo
It's hard to choose a particular destination, it's always special and memorable for us. Especially now as this is our farewell tour.
Temple Magazine
This is your last album, what’s next?
Go
For me? I don't know, freedom. We still have many concerts to come.
Tomo
I will always keep playing music, though for now I am looking forward to experimenting with different projects too.
Go
We travel with the idea of having a good time, staying healthy, make every show special.

After 10 years of Kikagaku Moyo and with the creation of our new and final album, for me, I truly felt that we achieved all that we could as five members. Creating music together as a band throughout all these years, we have always been committed to creating work that we are proud of. Ultimately, we wanted to complete our journey as a group on our own terms and on our highest note possible. For now, we have settled on an “indefinite hiatus”, as a creative break that we are allowing for all of the members.
We are very grateful that we could choose this way to archive such a special project. This was mostly possible because Go and I have been running our own record label for the band. On that note, we are very excited for our new artist releases coming out soon on the Guruguru label.
